"For some strange reason, most cruising people profoundly dislike steering by hand. The prospect of spending hour after hour at the helmused to deter most people from long distance cruising. This is undoubtedly the main reason why, until relatively recently, the number of sailing boats venturing far afieldwas very small indeed. However, all that changed with the advent of automatic pilots specifically built for yachts plus the development of efficient wind operated self-steering devices. Suddenly, the chore of hand-steering was a thing of the past and long ocean passages could be a pleasure – even on yachts with the smallest of crews. Having made one circumnavigation of over 70.000 miles with an Aries and another of some 40.000 with a Hydrovane, I could not be accused of exaggerating if I state unreservedly that one of the most important pieces of equipment on any cruising yacht is a wind-operated self-steering gear.

Unfortunately, and surprisingly, this view is not shared by many Cruising sailors. This is primarily because most of us have grown up with technology around us, we tend to take the push-button mentality with us to sea. Steering a given course is easy to achieve by setting a compass course and pushing a button on the autopilot, and, nowadays, this is what most sailors perfer to do. It is usually on the first morning with flat batteries that the love-affair with their favourite toy comes to an aprupt end. Having been forced to listen to countless heart-rendering stories on this very theme at the end of the ARC or similar trans-ocean rally, I managed to persuade Peter Förthmann to come to Las Palmas before the start of the ARC to talk to our participants about the pros and cons of self-steering. His talks and workshops became an instant success, not only becausde he knows this subject better than anyone else in the world, but also because he always speaks generically about both wind-operated self-steering gears and electronic autopilots. He never tried to sell his own products and, in this way, enjoyed the interest and confidence of his audience.

I am therefore pleased, not only that he took my advice to write this long-overdue book, but also that he managed to do it so fairly and objectively by giving all his competitors an equal opportunity to make their products known. Het boek - een chronologie

Jimmy Cornell gaf de eerste aanzet!

Na vele lezingen op seminars over het onderwerp SELFSTEERING UNDER SAIL, die Peter Förthmann in Engeland en voorafgaand aan de ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) in Las Palmas / Gran Canaria heeft gehouden, was het Jimmy Cornell, die de aanzet tot het schrijven van een boek met dezelfde titel gaf. Actuele vakliteratuur over dit onderwerp was er in de hele wereld niet te vinden en de honger naar informatie onder de zeilers was groot.
Peter Förthmann had twee jaar nodig om het materiaal over het omvangrijke onderwerp autopilots en windvaanstuurinrichtingen te verwerken en samen te vatten.
Het boek werd in de herfst van 1998 bij ADLARD COLES NAUTICAL / LONDON in samenwerking met de INTERNATIONAL MARINE / MAINE uitgegeven. Binnen een paar weken was een aanzienlijk deel van de oplage uitverkocht. In de VS werd het boek o.a. op de lijst van Barnes & Nobles gezet.

Januari 1999
Richard Curran / WINDHUNTER dient bij het High Court in London twee klachten tegen de uitgever en auteur in.

Oktober 1999
De uitgever dient met succes een verzoek in de aanklacht te schrappen. De klager gaat in beroep. De uitgever komt tot een vergelijk en het proces wordt beëindigd.

Oktober 2000
De schrijver dient met succes een verzoek in de aanklacht te schrappen met kosten voor de klager. Beroep wordt geweigerd.

Tot zover het nuchtere verslag van een geschil over het hoofdstuk "Power generator / autopilot hybrid", waarin een systeem, Windhunter genaamd, wordt beschreven, dat al ca. 10 jaar in Engeland en later in de VS in de handel was.
Gedurende het proces werden de volgende feiten duidelijk:

Een "Testreport", gepubliceerd in de YACHTING WQRLD van april 1995 werd door de president van Windhunter Sackville Currie opgemaakt - maar in de "Reprint" van dit "Testreport" alsook op de website werd de naam van de opsteller niet genoemd.
De klager werd door een rechterlijk bevel verplicht

• om de correspondentie aangaande bezwaarschriften van zijn klanten te tonen en de
• klanten te noemen die hun geld teruggekregen hadden.

Het Windhunter systeem werd terstond gemodificeerd, het handboek verscheen in ca. 58 versies. De laatste systeemwijziging van april 2000 was voorzien van alle details die de aangeklaagde in zijn boek als zinvol beschreven heeft.

RECHTSGESCHIL GEWONNEN

Peter Förthmann, eigenaar van de firma Windpilot in Hamburg, publiceerde in 1996 een degelijk onderbouwd boek over autopilots en windvaanstuurinrichtingen (Pietsch Verlag ). Voor een Engelse uitgave wist hij in 1998 de uitgeverij Adlard Coles Nautical in Londen te interesseren.

Bij de toevoegingen voor de Engelse markt kwam ook Windhunter in de lijst met systemen terecht. Dit hybride generator/autopilot-systeem werd in het begin van de jaren negentig ontwikkeld en verkreeg dankzij een welwillend artikel in YACHTING WORLD 1995 een zekere bekendheid. Het zou, naast zijn functie als autopilot, ook voor de opwekking van elektriciteit gebruikt kunnen worden. Een regen van klachten van kopers over permanente wijzigingen en ontwikkelingen, alsook de gebrekkige kwaliteit brachten Förthmann tot kritische opmerkingen over het duidelijk nog niet gerijpte systeem. Deze opmerkingen werden opnieuw door de eigenaar van het bedrijf, Richard Curran, aangegrepen om verwijdering van de tekst en schadevergoeding te eisen. Hij beschuldigde Förthmann ervan hem als concurrent uit de markt te willen dringen.

Terwijl de uitgeverij Adlard Coles Nautical na een jaar een duur compromis aanging en het boek uit de handel nam, zette Förthmann, in de wetenschap dat zeer vele kopers ontevreden over de systemen waren, alleen de strijd voort en ten slotte met succes: de rechters veroordeelden de tegenpartij Curran tot betaling van alle proceskosten en onmiddellijke terugbetaling aan de schrijver van de door de uitgeverij betaalde schadevergoeding. Windhunter is inmiddels uit de handel genomen.
