Hi Peter,
Thanks for the post on using a JSD. The video links were very informative.
I am however completely confused as to what you are concluding in regard to using a JSD with a windpilot.
Are you saying that there are 2 potential options;
1. Lift the pendulum out of the water
2. Disengage the pilot so that the pendulum does not swing enough to entangle?
Both these options leave me with questions.
I have a pacific pilot and it is near impossible to lift the pendulum when the boat is moving even at 1-2 kts. You seem to imply that there is a cunning way to do this that others have used but are not going to disclose it as a ‘procedure’.
I can only think that timing the lift with the swell is the only solution – other than using mechanical advantage – which you frown upon.
I am also concerned as to leaving the disconnected pendulum in the water, the JSD bridle can move well across the stern and I would think the potential to entangle whilst reduced is nevertheless still there.
Any thoughts please?
Best wishes from NZ
