Hi Peter,
greetings from Darwin, Australia from on-board of Comino, of course. I am 2/3 around the world, I figured a thing or two about the wind vane by now. The best investment I made for the voyage, my autopilot is long time gone, but unless there is zero wind I never touch the helm, and I am single-handing mostly. I was actually going to write to you about my experience with the wind vane but never got around it.When I fitted it I was looking at pics of other H22-s and they didn’t have the crossbar on, so I didn’t put it on either. I realized quickly that those pics were probably taken before the skippers learned it did need to be put on. Then the control lines still touched the backstay on one side, but a piece of plastic pipe for chafe protection solved that.
Another reoccurring problem was the bracket always tilting back around the bolts (the pivot points) but eventually I managed to tighten up them sufficiently, and they are holding up nicely in the last 5000 miles or so. As my boat is my home, she is a bit overloaded, and the pendulum rudder shaft could be a little bit shorter, I drag the fitting point (with the shear bolt) in the water at all time. There is no way to put the device higher.
I didn’t find any instructions in the manual about the ‚remote control‘ lines, and although I tried them and used them occasionally, I didn’t find them very useful.
I figured at the very beginning how important the pendulum rudder to be pointing aft, and the main column to be vertical. It does change though with the boat laden heavily or being light.
Anyway, I am very happy with the unit, and will choose the same for my next boat.
I am a bit technologically challenged at the moment, all my digital devices are giving up their souls slowly, and will need some time to dig out some photos, but feel free to use and download any from my blog or facebook page.
Thank you.
Regards,
Attila
